C.G.P. Grey produces amusing & interesting educational videos on YouTube. Some of his most well known videos are debunking popular misconceptions. His videos can easily fit under science & social studies with videos like, Can Texas Secede from the Union?, What if the Electoral College is Tied?, Is Pluto a Planet?, & What are Continents? It is recommended that these are good from middle & high school students, but it is advise to watch the video first to see if it would fit with your class.

In December of 2012 students at Plattsmouth Elementary School created an educational video & submitted it into the Mountains of Creativity Video Contest. Next Vista, an organization out of California that provides free educational resources for teachers, put on the contest through their website nextvista.org. The contest was offered worldwide & had entries from various states & even other countries.
The third graders had 90 seconds to teach a concept of their choice. After deciding to teach cause & effect, students worked on editing the script, practicing their lines, filming the video, & adding sound effects.
Next Vista is a wonderful resource for teachers. There is a plethora of educational videos put together by teachers & students to explain content. Simply type in your topic in the search & preview the videos, searching for one that will explain your topic the best!
I strongly encourage you to use Next Vista in your classroom & to consider participating in one of their video contests. Students learn to plan, work together, express themselves, & how to complete a project from start to finish. Next Vista next contest is called Creative Flight & the deadline is Friday, April 19th. Good luck!
WatchKnowLearn is a great alternative to YouTube. They have FREE quality educational videos that cover all major topics from elementary to secondary, & are kid safe. It is easy to find a video by selecting a subject & grade level. Many of these videos are not from YouTube & can be viewable by your students. WatchKnowLearn has indexed over 50,000 educational videos, & placed them into a directory of over 5,000 categories.
Another new project is the WatchKnowLearn Classroom. This will allow teachers to create their own classroom pages of videos. Teachers can pick their own subdomains for WatchKnowLearn Classrooms. For example, I could create a classroom at myname.watchknowlearn.org & send my students to that page to watch the videos I've selected for them. You can also add student accounts to keep track of their progress. In other words, a favorites list of videos for students to access 24/7.
WatchKnowLearn are also creating lists for Common Core aligned videos, along with multiple language navigation.
YouTube has recently launched YouTube EDU. This platform gives students access to approved educational videos, those through Google's Education Partners (e.g. Kahn Academy, TED, PBS & Stanford), & those that have been teacher approved. Schools can set up networks with playlists of approved videos. Comments & related video links have been disabled & searching is limited to YouTube EDU. The videos are categorized by grade level & subject (i.e. primary - university). YouTube Teachers has grade & subject-specific playlists aligned with educational standards (compiled by teachers).
